University of New Brunswick Reds, NB - USports Case Study

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds have had an unparalleled season, finishing with a perfect 43-0 record, claiming the AUS Division Championship for the 20th time in program history, and securing back-to-back USports National Championships (marking a historical 10th Championship win for the franchise). A key factor behind their dominance has been their integration of GameStrat, a cutting-edge video analysis software. We had the opportunity to record an interview with William Healey, the Director of Operations and Video Coach for the Reds, to gain insight into the Reds' experience using GameStrat for live to bench replay. Healey opened with comments on GameStrat's user-friendly interface and exceptional support.

Elevating the Game: The Impact of Live to Bench Replay Technology

Every day technology continues to evolve and seemingly make its way into every facet of our lives, and hockey is no exception. Introducing “Live to Bench Replay”, the revolutionary technological advancement that is changing the way hockey teams approach in-game adjustments, fostering a more dynamic and informed approach to the sport. If you’ve watched hockey in the last 5 years, you’ve probably seen a picture similar to the one below of a coach or player looking at an iPad on the bench in between shifts, but what is the purpose?

As much as I want to help GameStrat grow throughout the league, and I wish everybody would use it…I hope nobody does, because we’re very competitive and it’s a huge advantage. -Ryan Papaioannou, Head Coach & GM of the Brooks Bandits (BCHL) In a fast paced environment like hockey, every move matters. However, the speed of the game also makes it difficult for coaches to see all the little details that may lead to a certain play. That's where technology is stepping in to help teams in a big way. Live to bench replay, commonly known as sideline replay in football, is now here to make a difference in hockey.

London Knights, ON - OHL Case Study
London Knights, ON - OHL Case Study

The London Knights have long been a staple of success in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the past few seasons have only cemented that status. Since joining the GameStrat team for the 2021–22 season, the Knights have continued to dominate—with three straight appearances in the OHL Championship and Memorial Cup (2023, 2024, and 2025), back-to-back first-place regular season finishes, and now, their third Memorial Cup title in franchise history. A powerhouse organization from top to bottom, the Knights are led by brothers Dale Hunter (President & Head Coach) and Mark Hunter (Vice President & General Manager)—two of the most respected names in Canadian junior hockey. And while their reputation has always been elite, their continued investment in tools like GameStrat’s live replay system reflects a commitment to staying ahead of the curve. In fact, this year’s Memorial Cup Final saw London defeat Medicine Hat, just one year after a close loss to fellow GameStrat program, the Saginaw Spirit in last year's Memorial Cup. With a standard of excellence already set, the Knights continue to look for any edge that helps keep them on top. We sat down with Assistant Coach Rick Steadman to hear more about how GameStrat Replay has fit into their on-bench coaching and contributed to their overall workflow.
